Addiction of yaba is the most broaden threat in terms of drug addiction in Bangladesh. Department of Narcotics Control of Bangladesh Government statistics showed that there are six million drug addicts in Bangladesh, most of them are involved with yaba. Now a days, This is the most trending drug. Stats on admitted patient’s of drug addiction treatment centers in Dhaka shows, more than eighty-four percent (84%) of them are suffering from Yaba Addiction. Yaba is a bitter-tasting pill, often found in pink, red, green and orange color that chased by hit on foil paper and mostly inhaled by smoking. In comparison to similar stimulants, much higher levels of Yaba enter the brain, making it a stronger stimulant drug. It also has longer lasting and more harmful effects on the central nervous system. Yaba has many street names, such as speed, baba, and guti. Yaba addiction affects the brain and creates feelings of pleasure, increasing energy and elevated mood. Yaba gives someone the ability to stay wide awake and do unrelieved activity with less need for sleep. Yaba, like regular amphetamines or methamphetamines, also suppress a person’s appetite and sometimes people get addicted to yaba as they are trying to lose weight. Most of the pleasurable effects of Yaba are believed to result from the release of very high levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine is involved in inspiration, the feeling of pleasure, and motor function. Yaba releases approximately ten to twelve times the dopamine that food, sex or other pleasant activities release. The prominent release of dopamine by yaba also contributes to the drug’s harmful effects on nerve terminals of the brain.
We know how many drugs of abuse – cocaine, heroin and nicotine – work, but less about how they lead to addiction. Studies of the brain-learning systems concerned are addressing the causes of addiction, with the intent of developing better treatments.
Drug addiction — which is increasingly seen as a neuropsychiatric disorder — places an enormous burden on society through its repercussions on crime rate and healthcare. The economic costs of addiction have been estimated at 80 billion dollars in the United States alone, and many Western countries have invested heavily in research towards understanding, treating and preventing addiction.

Psychological effects of methamphetamine include euphoria, anxiety, increased libido, alertness, concentration, increased energy, increased self-esteem, self-confidence, sociability, irritability, aggressiveness, psychosomatic disorders, psychomotor agitation, dermatillomania(compulsive skin picking), hair pulling, delusions of grandiosity, hallucinations, excessive feelings of power and invincibility, repetitive and obsessive behaviors, paranoia, and – with chronic use and/or high doses – amphetamine psychosis. Long term yaba abuse has a high association with depression, ADHD, Bi- polar disorder as well as serious heart disease, amphetamine psychosis, anxiety, and violent behaviors. Yaba is also very highly addictive and now a day, it is the most abusive drug of choice among the drug addicts. Yaba is not directly neurotoxin but long-term use can have neurotoxin side- effects. Its use is associated with an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease due to the fact that uncontrolled dopamine release is neurotoxin Long-term dopamine up-regulation occurring as a result of Yaba abuse can cause neurotoxicity, which is believed to be responsible for causing persisting cognitive deficits, such as memory loss, impaired attention, and decreased executive function. Similar to the neurotoxin effects on the dopamine system, Yaba can also result in neurotoxicity to the serotonin system14. Over 20% of people
Drug addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the drug addict and those around them. Drug addiction is a brain disease because the abuse of drugs leads to changes in the structure and function of the brain. Many of us do not understand why or how other people become addicted to drugs. Family members and loved ones often assumed that drug addicts lack moral principles or willpower and that they could stop using drugs simply by choosing to change their behavior. In reality, drug addiction is a very complicated disease, and relinquishing takes more than good intentions or a strong will. In fact, because drugs change the brain in ways that nurture compulsive drug abuse, quitting is difficult, even for those who are ready to do so. Advanced science lets us know more about how drugs work in the brain than ever, and we also know that drug addiction treatment can be successful helping addicts stop abusing drugs and lead productive lives is possible.
